HD content slowly becoming more popular

Consumers purchasing high-definition TVs are often disappointed when they get home and notice a lack of video quality when compared to what was seen on the show floor.

Even though there has been a drastic increase in HD programming, most TV content still is streamed in standard-definition.  The problem this causes is that HDTVs are normally high-definition only when they are playing HD content, not standard-definition.

"The circumstances are definitely getting better, but it's probably not happening as fast as some folks might like it to happen," said Jupitermedia analyst Michael Gartenberg in a statement to the San Jose Mercury News.

Despite the fact that half of all TVs sold now are HDTVs, only a minority of content shown is in HDTV.  Now that more consumers are purchasing the TVs, it's time for content producers to begin releasing more HD content for us to watch on our snazzy new TVs.

Netflix is expanding its Blu-ray catalog, but it doesn't seem like consumers are in a big hurry to get HD content.  Furthermore, Microsoft Xbox 360 owners who stream content can also receive HD content through their Xbox.  Major cable and satellite providers in Europe, North America and Asia are now upgrading their networks to host HD.

A problem some companies now face is a lack of broadband, as HD video requires more bandwidth and higher capacity is needed.  Cable and phone companies have been forced to upgrade their networks while satellite providers launch additional satellites into orbit.

A new Nielsen study indicates TV adoption rate in the United States has increased drastically over the past 18 months.  According to analysts' numbers, 23.2 percent, or 26 million households, in the United States have at least one HDTV, with many households buying multiple HDTVs.

As more people continue to purchase HDTVs, content providers must adapt to be able to offer a wider variety of HD content.
