Hacked NEC ND-3500A firmware released with Booktype support

Warning: if you
flash your optical drive with an unofficial firmware version your warranty will
be void. If you do not know what you're doing then simply don't flash your
drive!

wesociety, our NEC
Forum Moderator, reports that "The Dangerous Brothers" have
released a hacked firmware version (2.F8) for the NEC ND-3500A drive. The
firmware was extracted from the MadDog 16X DVD recorder, which can be
loaded in the NEC drive. The benefit of this is that this firmware version
supports Single Layer Bitsetting which means that you can turn your DVD+R discs
into DVD-ROM discs!

One disadvantage though was that when you flash
your NEC ND-3500A drive with the MadDog firmware the drive would have a
different ID-string, meaning that your NEC drive would be recognized as a MadDog
drive instead. Thanks to "The Dangerous Brothers" this has been fixed
as the ID-string has been changed to "_NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG 2.F8":

A new Single Layer bitsetting firmware (2.F8) for MadDog
16X DVD writers has just been released in the forums. This firmware can
also be loaded onto NEC 3500A drives to enable Single Layer
Bitsetting!

TDB have now patched a version with the NEC 3500 ID
string!
http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND3500A This
firmware will cause the drive to report as "_NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG 2.F8".
Nice!

please make sure you understand the consequences of flashing your drive with an
unofficial firmware version!
