Hardware Zone reviews Panasonic's SW-9585 Super Multi burner

The
Hardware Zone has just published a review of the Panasonic internal drive,
namely the 16x dual layer, Super-Multi SW-9585.

There were a few areas in which the SW-9585 performed rather
admirably, and in doing so, managed to redeem itself somewhat from a
lackluster display of its capabilities. Most impressive of all is the 16x
read speed (data transfer speed) for Pressed DVD and DVD±R media. This is
followed by a fine demonstration of its media compatibility programming
where all but one out of 21 DVD media were correctly detected and written
at their nominal ratings. Write quality as pointed out by KProbe 2, is
another commendable trait of the Panasonic drive, which for some is
heartening enough to see them make the switch or upgrade to the
SW-9585.

When all is weighed and evaluated, we couldn't help but
have a minor reservation on our rating of Panasonic's rekindled attempt in
making a presence in consumer ODD retail channel once more. Compared to an
LG offering, the US$59 SW-9585 is just somehow not as competitive and
convincing a Super Multi DVD writer to warrant our utmost recommendation.
Furthermore, with the roadmap of several manufacturers all listing a Super
Multi offering, both LG and Panasonic would have to keep up the pace in
order to shrug off the imminent competition from global players before the
year's up.

While
we mentioned that the Panasonic SW-9585 does not have bit setting, it is
only true for the older batch. Panasonic has just updated us that the
newer drives will support Book Type Management.

Why not head over to the Hardware Zone and check out this detailed review by Justin Ong.
Let's see what his testing reveals about this burner. We have also reviewed this
same drive here so
if you would like to discuss this comparison, the dedicated thread for this
review can be found here.
