Hitachi Maxell stores 200 movies (1000 GB) on a disc, new DVD technology

Hitachi
Maxell has announced it has developed a technology that will enable consumers to store up to 200 (which would mean 200 times about 5 GB of data, or even more) movies on a DVD disc. The technology works by adding several data layers to the disc. The current DVD technology has a maximum of 2 layers, the new technology allows multipe layers containing data. According to the company consumers will be able to enjoy the technology by 2007.

The firm developed the cutting-edge technology with Hitachi Maxell, a subsidiary specialising in audio and video tapes. "We expect demand for a DVD with a bigger capacity and hope to market the product globally in the near future," said Hitachi spokesman Takeshi Kawakami.

The latest technology involves stacking multiple data-storing layers to ensure accurate reading and writing of a vast amount of data that can run up to 400 hours
