Hulu and Disney strike a deal

Lost and Grey's Anatomy are among the television programs coming to Hulu under an agreement with Disney, officially announced today.

The offerings will include primetime, daytime and family shows from ABC's broadcast channel, older ABC shows such as Commander In Chief and Less Than Perfect, select Disney Channel shows such as Wizards of Waverly Place, "popular library titles from The Walt Disney Studios" and short-form content such as webisodes and sneak previews.

Hulu and Disney haven't said when the content will begin to appear. A regulatory review and other formalities must be dealt with first.

Of note, the press release makes no mention of ESPN. It would be nice to see support for SportsCenter, Pardon the Interruption and other shows that aren't live sporting events, but I wasn't expecting Disney to go full bore with its content when this deal was in the rumor mill. On that note, there's not much cable content -- the kind you'd pay for as a subscriber -- coming to the platform.

Still, I'm excited to see more shows coming to a centralized location, with three of the our major networks participating. It seems that Hulu is now squarely in the lead for providing current television online, having pulled its content from TV.com in February. Now all the site needs is to start turning a profit.
