The Dutch company Attorn announced the Hyperdrive4, an Integrated RAM Drive Electronics (IRDE) interface based Solid State Disk (SSD). Solid State refers to the fact that there are no mechanical moving parts, which directly results in high durability and low access times. The device behaves like an IDE device and appears to the computer system and BIOS to be an IDE storage device, but fact contains no mechanical or parts at all.
The main feature of this drive is a higher speed compared to solid state drives based on flash memories, because the Hyperdrive4 is based on DDR1 registered RAM memories, that are much faster than currently available flash memories.
The main disadvantage of RAM memories, however, is the total data loss if power is shutted down, but an enbedded Li-ion battery prevents this risk.
The only moving part in this drive, that can be installed on a 5.25" drive bay, is a little fan to ensure the correct cooling of all RAM modules installed internally.
More detailed specification can be found here. Performance details can be found here. As you can imagine, the lesser interesting part is price: £1195 (about €1,750 or $2,330) it is really excessive for a 16 GB drive.
