IBM joins global DVD-Patent licensing group DVD6C



Todays news comes from Big Blue, the name IBM is also known by. The company has announced it has joined the DVD6C Licensing Agency, six companies who control licensing over DVD related products:



International Business Machines Corp. of the U.S. has joined "the DVD6C Licensing Agency" - a consortium comprising six companies in a worldwide joint licensing program for digital versatile disc player-related products, sources close to the matter said Thursday.

The six members are AOL Time Warner Inc. (TWX - News) , Hitachi Ltd. (HIT or 6501), Matsushita Electric Industrial Co . (MC or 6752), Mitsubishi Electric Corp. ( J.MBE or 6503), Toshiba Corp. (J.TOS or 6502) and Victor Co . of Japan (J.VIC or 6792).

"After checking through an outside organization, we have concluded that IBM also has essential DVD-related patents," a Toshiba spokeswoman said.

The DVD6C joint licensing program, launched in 1999, is for DVD-Video players, DVD-ROM (read-only-memory) drives, DVD decoders and DVD-Video and DVD-ROM discs.

The DVD6C license portfolio consists of the members' essential patents for the DVD-Video and DVD-ROM formats. The agency currently has over 120 licensees in the world

IBM's membership in the program will benefit existing and future licensees of the DVD6C, who will obtain a license to IBM's essential patents for the DVD- Video and DVD-ROM formats at no additional charge.
