PC maker speaks out against IBM hard disk
IBM's hard disks are coming under close scrutiny after end users questioned the reliability of the 60GXP.
Comments posted on online news groups have deemed the hard disks prone to failure, an analysis backed by at least one PC manufacturer in the UK. 'It seems to be a problem with the GXP family,' said Andy Neeves from Panrix's technical support centre. 'It's almost as if they've overdone it with the 7200[rpm] spin speed.
'Problems are so consistent, although we've never quantified it as such. All we know is that we don't want to touch these drives anymore.'
Neeves said problems with the 60GXP were particularly frustrating given the popularity of the drives, which have earned a good reputation based on performance.
No other manufacturers reported problems and IBM wasn't commenting on the issue.
