Independant film studios sue MPAA

Several independant movie labels have sued the MPAA as a reaction to not sending screeners of movies to the members of the academy awards. Although the MPAA lifted their restrictions, the sueing studios fear not to be competitive with the big movie labels in future.

Several independant film studios filed a lawsuit against the MPAA in New York. They fear a decrease in sales because of  the restricted distribution of screeners.

In October the MPAA announced, not to send DVDs or Videotapes to the members of the Academy Awards. Some members received special encoded videotapes while others had to watch the movies in cinemas in order to watch films that should be awarded an Oscar. But there the movies of smaller film studios are less frequently shown than that of hollywood-companies

The article states, that among the 14 sueing companies were Talking Wall Pictures, Sandcastle 5 Productions and Salty Features.

Although screeners are not given away, many films still reach P2P before their official release date. Especially those from the big hollywood companies. So their screener ban seems no to be a big success for the MPAA.
