Iomega gave an interesting quote to PC World while they were introducing their 12x USB dual layer DVD drive at CeBIT America. The drive is expected to ship in June, but, as we all know, finding the media is going to be a challenge. What may be of interest to us, is this comment made by Richard Giannini - Iomegas product manager.
"The dual-media will not be widely available until [the fourth quarter]," says Richard Giannini, Iomega product manager. At that point, prices should drop to about $ 5 a disc, he says. The discs will play in existing DVD drives that support the +R format. |
Time will tell I guess. Also in the article, it is revealed that Iomega plans to make available the Super DVD QuickTouch. This external drive will sport an MPEG-2 capture card. That way, you can record directly from a VCR or a video camera. They also say it will save time by launching recording software on the PC with a single push of a button. This device is expected to be offered for $ 329 and will hit the store shelves in July. Now, where is the media and what price will it have to hit, to justify this new format to the mainstream public? Will you pay 5 dollars for a DL blank disc?
