It seems that an universal player is not a so easy solution to implement to stop the war between next generation Hi Definition optical formats, Blu-ray and HD-DVD. The multiplayer announced by LG at CES seems to have many issues on the HD-DVD side, so it is not de facto the solution that end-consumers was waiting for.
The other emerging solution is a multilayer disc containing all video formats (DVD, Blu-ray and HD-DVD) each on a separate layer. This was already discussed in our news, but it seems that this solution is becoming more trusted by manufacturers. In fact, according to a news published at Engineering Times, New Medium Enterprises (NME) has secured worldwide patents for its high-capacity versatile multilayer disc (VMD) technology.
According to the article:
VMD technology provides up to eight information layers on each side of a disc and can be used for both blue laser and red laser formats, thus offering greater content options. The technology is suitable for single- and double-sided discs, and for multiple formats, including Blu-ray and HD DVD.
Considering how many problems the current dual layer technology can give (whoever burns DL discs already know this), I wonder how much reliable will a disc with eight layers be...
