According to an interesting article published at Audioholics, the HDMI interface was developed to serve the interests of the content-provider industries, not to serve the interests of the consumer.
This is not the first time that something is designed for industry interests only, because according to the article the DVI interface is also a messy thing giving no real advantages to end-consumers.
There are some technical explanations on the original article, but basically what they are saying is that the HDMI interface is nothing more than a new fancy connector, whereas cables still have the same defects of the DVI interface, i.e. low performance over long distances and various other technical issues.
Of course, to all this must be added also the DRM stuff that further increase confusion and creates no advantages at all for end-consumers.
As usual, feel free to discuss about this on our forum.
