We can read in this report over at Music Industry News, that one unlucky Italian DJ is going to have to cough up some money somehow, hopefully for a talented attorney. Caught red handed in a nightclub near Rome with more than 2,000 MP3 music files that are suspected to be illegal downloads and 500 pirated video clips, they really threw the book at this guy.
Enzo Mazza, Director of the Italian recording industry association (FIMI), said: "We are pleased with the fine imposed by the Rieti Fiscal police. This DJ was touring clubs and making money out of the music he played - while those who had invested time, talent, hard work and money into creating the music in the first place did not get a cent. We hope this precedent will serve as a deterrent for those who are thinking of doing the same." |
Apparently, the Fiscal Police have an ongoing operation targeting radio stations and clubs around the region. Well, they say if you can't do the time, don't do the crime, but this is like shooting an ant with an elephant gun. Let's hope this poor guy get's his penalty reduced or something, we now see that this is a serious offense. Does anyone from this area know as to whether there was any advance notice or public education campaign prior to this raid? What other actions have these Fiscal Police taken in the past?
