LG will become the latest company to publicly unveil plans to launch a 3D TV, as the company plans to launch one or two models sometime in 2009.
The South Korean company plans to launch one or two in 2009, with 2010 and 2011 being big years for 3D TVs, according to company officials. Only a handful of markets will get the LG 3D TVs in 2009, with company officials not saying which markets will be targeted.
Even if companies begin to slowly roll out 3D televisions in the next few years, the price point will keep it a niche product that most consumers will not be able to afford.
More movie theaters in the United States are showing 3D films, and Japanese broadcasting has two hours of 3D content per day. A quick look at your local movie theater should reveal at least one 3D movie that will be playing at the theater in the immediate future.
JVC Victor and the Japanese National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) are collaborating to create a new 72" 3D HDTV.
A common problem manufacturers are trying to tackle is the ability to watch TV in 3D without the need of glasses. Companies also will have to try and lower the price of 3D TVs in the near future, before consumer interest in the technology vanishes.
