Lightning raid nabs Australian CD pirates

Music industry lawyers have launched a clampdown on illegal CD burners in shops and newsagents across Australia. Last week lawyers walked into a newsagent and gave the owner several hours to stop customers using a CD copier. The raid was the first move in a campaign to get rid of an estimated 100 CD copying machines nationwide.

Michael Speck from Music Industry Piracy Investigations said: "What they are doing is inherently illegal. It is clearly set up to make money out of other people's property."

The producer of the machines, Hank Schreurs of the Brisbane-based Aussie Blue Vending Company, said the copiers were intended for use by people copying CDs containing their own data.

Five Dock Newsagency owner Tony Fanouf said: "The suppliers assured me as long as we didn't tell people what they should do with the machine we should be in the clear."
