Lite-On drives have always been very popular on our forums. Not only because they offer good
quality burns for a relative low price but also because they can be
'overclocked'. Overclocking means nothing more then loading the firmware of a
newer drive to an older drive. E.g in the past 24x CD recorders were sold and
when applying the firmware of a 52x CD recorder it worked flawlessy. We even
found out that in many time the same hardware was used. Overclocking was named
after OC-Freak who was one of the first to discover this. Nowadays we
already knew that applying firmwares of newer DVD recorders to older DVD
recorders worked, but today we have a truly amazing disovery: 4x DVDRW drives
that can be overclocked to 8x, double layer capable DVDRW
drives.
Owners of a Lite-On 451S (lowest price $ 69.50 ) and a Lite-On 851S can load the firmware of the Lite-On 832S and burn their DVD+Rs at 8x speed and also write to double layer media. Before this seemed impossible also because many manufacturers have told us that upgrading a 4x drive to a double layer writer was impossible due hardware differences. At least for a few (lucky?) ones on our forum it seems to work flawlessy.
A: 8x -R, unfortunately, is not possible on the 51S series because the hardware just can't do it (see the "Technical Stuff" below for more details). There's nothing that we could do, and believe me, we've tried. So -R writing speeds are limited to 4x (we modified the firmware so that it won't even allow 8x -R). However, as a bonus, 4x -RW does work. Q: Does +R DL (double-layer) work? A: Yes, it works. This has been tested by multiple people. Every attempt (there have been at least 4) has been successful with the exception of one (but that was because computer crashed during the burn as the result a software failure, so it wasn't the drive's fault). Q: And what about regular single-layer? A: C0deKing (who, BTW, deserves much applause for all this) and I actually do not own 812S drives. We have both been using various 812S and 832S firmwares on our 451S drives for our regular day-to-day burns for over two months now. We have not encountered any problems during this time, and we have both been getting excellent results. Any 812S/832S scans that we have posted throughout the forum have actually been burned with our 451S drives. |
Of course it's
important to note that 'overclocking' voids your warrantee and should be done
