Lite-On IT aims for 10-15% of the global DVD recorder market in 2005

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that Digitimes reports that Lite-On is aiming for 10 to 15% (now about 8%) of the global DVD recorder market in 2005. This time the company is not talking about the DVD recorders that are used in Personal Computers (PCs) but about the stand-alone devices that are expected to replace the VCR. The Taiwanese company has already several stand-alone models and it will expand this product range to devices with build in hard disks and VHS playing and recording capabilitities.

Lite-On IT will have five lines of DVD recorders, including
single format, dual format, VHS+DVD combo, HDD DVD and DVD recorders
equipped with an IEEE 1394 port for recording directly from DVs (digital
video camcorders), explained Liao. Next month, the company will begin
shipping 80GB HDD DVD recorders priced at US0-550. Combo models priced at
about US0 will be launched one month later, Liao indicated.DVD recorders
have gross margins of 25-30%, as opposed to 20% for PC-use DVD
drives/burners, Liao said.

The company is optimistic about the stand-alone DVD recorder market as according to the company these kind of devices are more complicated to manufacture and will therefor have less competition from (cheap) Chinese manufacturers. Read the entire story at Digitimes. Have you already replaced your VCR with a stand-alone recorder? And if not are you think about it or are still things that need to improve (such as the pricing?).
