Lite-On IT enjoys fast sales in slow season

Digitimes reports that it has shipped almost 800k CD-RW drives in November. The company has sold drives to large companies such as IBM, Apple, Compaq and Dell.

December is expected to be another good month for the company. Lite-On IT will begin volume production of 32x CD-RW drives in December, followed by 40x and combo drives in the second quarter of 2002.

Lite-On IT's last CD-RW order for Philips' own-brand line went out at the end of November, and many are wondering whether the projected growth for December is thanks to another large order. The company pointed out that previous orders from Philips were about the same size as those from IBM, Compaq, Dell, Gateway, Sony and Apple. Besides, Philips is still asking for optical drives as part of its PC bundles. In addition, its retreat from own-brand CD-RW drives has compelled competitors to increase orders to Lite-On IT.
