Lite-On IT expects slim-type ODD shipments to double in 2006

Lite-On IT, a well known optical disc drive manufacturer originally had a target of 5 million slim-type optical drives for shipment for 2006, however at this stage they with such a growing demand for slip-type optical drives for laptop computers, they now estimate to reach between 9 and 9.5 million by the year end.

With such as strong growth, Lite-On now expects this figure to double for 2006.  Besides slim-type, half-height and standalone ODD's, Lite-On IT has developed DVD camcorders and in-car DVD players where they expect to begin production between in the 2nd quarter and 2nd half of 2006 respectively.

Lite-On IT estimates it will ship 9.0-9.5 million slim-type optical disc drives (ODDs) for this year and expects to double shipment volume in 2006 due to growing global demand for notebook PCs and large orders from new clients, according to associated vice president Mike Wu for the company's production base in Guangzhou, China.

About half of the slim-type ODDs shipped this year were DVD burners, Wu indicated, adding that the estimated shipment volume is much larger than the original goal of five million for this year.

It seems like Lite-On is back to gaining popularity in the optical drive market, much like they have done back in the days when CD writers where at their height, particularly with how often they are coming out with new DVD writer models and improved specifications and writing performance.
