Lite-On IT may ship 20 million slim ODDs this year

D4rk0n3 used our news submit to tell us about this information posted over at DigiTimes, that
tells us some sales figures for LiteON IT optical drives. From this report, we
can see that there will be quite an increase in sales this year when compared to
last year. Last years sales were already impressive!

Lite-On IT delivered nine million slim-type optical disc drives (ODDs) last year, and stands a good chance of shipping 20 million this year mainly because of orders from Sony NEC Optiarc, a new joint venture to be established early next month by combining the ODD businesses of Sony and NEC, according to industry sources.

Currently one of the world's top three
suppliers of slim-type ODDs, NEC is expected to shift part of its
production to Lite-On IT on an OEM basis following the establishment of
Sony NEC Optiarc, because Sony currently has a close business relationship
with the Taiwan-based maker, the sources pointed out.

In addition, Lite-On IT may also obtain
OEM orders for half-height (H/H) ODDs from the new joint venture. To cope
with dropping OEM prices for 16x DVD Dual burners, Lite-On IT has begun
volume production of more profitable Super Multi DVD (triple formats)
burners, according to the company. Mainly due to the dropping OEM price,
Lite-On IT's February consolidated revenues of NT$4.02 billion decreased
9.11% on year.

We certainly have already seen some of these multi
drives, even ones with LightScribe-such as the the SHM-165H6S. The article may be viewed in it's entirety from the
