Weazel used our newssubmit to tell us that people that are looking for a Sony DRU-500A can now also buy a Sony DW-U10A and convert it to a DRU-500A. The DW-U10A is according to the reports a bulk version of the DRU-500A, which means it comes without software and DVD discs. Also a different firmware is installed, rpc1.org has all the information how to convert the drive to a DRU-500A.

The dw-u10a is the bulk-version of the dru500a, so it comes without any media samples and without any software. futhermore the dw-u10a uses another firmware release (with slightly different behaviour), just to make a difference between the two models.
So if you can get a dru500a at the same price, go for it. anyway, there are many advertised dru500a, but they are rarely available for delivery, while the dw-u10a still seems to be really available.
From the hardware point of view both models are the same (as far as I can see). I guess as soon as the dru500a will be available in great numbers, the price for the dw-u10a will drop... maybe below the 300 € barrier.
More information can be found here. As many people are looking for the Sony DRU-500A and it's availability is limited, this is a way to get one!
