MPAA used 1600 KiSS DP-600 prototypes for Academy Awards

Lord KiRon used our news submit to tell us "Looks like now we know who is new "secret" player MPAA is using. The bigger question what drive they using." 🙂 According to this report over at Mpeg Playcenter, a total of 16.000 slightly changed KiSS DP-600 units have been shipping for months, without network capability and a different drive. It appears the alterations were done for the movie industry. Apparently, the screener situation last year spurred the innovation.

They send screeners out and you know these became available shortly after release on the Internet. Last year i think, they used VHS tapes as Jack Valenti, was unhappy that the DVD's they used the previous years where copied on the Internet and used as the base for the many so called "Screeners".

One of the rules to be considered for the Oscar nomination is that it must not be available at that moment on Video. That means all the movies omitted to the Oscars are secret.

The MPAA was extremely interested in the solution that would meet the security needed for having a safe environment to do the evaluation and be able to use the DVD Quality.

I tell you what happens.
They actually distribute the movies on disk media but not DVD's. They are encrypted in totally different ways which they brought to us and we built a DVD player based on that and on the Dp-600 which meets the security requirements. You can say it's a DP-600 with a different drive.

I can say the player has been severely debugged for DVD playback. When people see this platform they will be very satisfied.

You may visit the Mpeg Playcenter site for more information about the "new" DP-600 player.
