MSI unveils 52/24/52/16 combo drive with ActivePanel Technology

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us he spotted MSIs latest optical offering for CD, the X52 CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Capable of max write speeds of 52x, hence the clever anagram for a name and 16x for reading DVD content. The drive will also support the Mt. Rainier format for a more seamless operation. MSI is known for bundling extra goodies to their products, in this case they have tossed in some color front panel replacements. This is what they are callling Active Panel.

MSI has unveiled a brand new combo drive. The X52 can read and write CDs at 52x, rewrite at 24x and read DVDs at speeds as high as 16x. Of course, it also features MSI"s ActivePanel technology so you can quickly and easily change the look of the drive.Write Speeds: 52x, 48x, 40x, 32x, 24x, 20x, 16x, 12x, 8x, 4x, 2x ReWrite Speeds: 24x, 20x, 16x, 12x, 10x, 8x, 6x, 4x, 2x CD Read Speed: 52x Max DVD Read Speed: 16x Max Buffer: 2MB with SuperLink technologyThe X52 also supports Mt. Rainier and can overburn up to 99 minutes.

MSI have modified the X52 in some way to protect customers from flying shards of CD plastics if one happens to get a "defective disc" that shatters in the high speed burning environment. Possibly preventing a painful visit to the emergency room or a nearby fertility clinic. They call this feature Hyperguard. However, they recommend the drive unit be sent back to the factory for the removal of the razor sharp shrapnel.

With Mini-Form, they have shortened up the length of the drive by 20mm for tight installation jobs to 170mm. Perhaps to help facilitate use in the new MSI Mega865G small form factor multimedia PC recently outed at the CES. There are two other nice features, one is called Softburn that is a mechanism that helps to reduce noise while the drive is in use, thereby facilitating the increasing desire for a silent PC. Finally, they have engineered ABS or Anti-Bumping System. This is an anti-shock solution that absorbs vibration and bumps that they claim will improve reading and writing accuracy.
