Macrovision Corporation, the world's leading provider of contentprotection and security technologies, announced today that the number of
protected tracks distributed on its CDS™ copy-protected music CDs reached a new
industry record in excess of 2 billion tracks.
Macrovision is the worldwide leader in the copy
protection of music content, having already protected over 200 million 'dual
session" CDs. These protected discs play on both traditional audio playback
devices and consumers' PCs, using Macrovision's patented and/or proprietary CDS
technology. The CDS technology enables consumers to access and play music on
their PCs while protecting that music against ripping, burning, and unauthorized
file trading. The Macrovision-protected albums include superstar releases from
most of the five major worldwide record companies, in addition to major record
labels in Japan.
'This milestone in copy protection usage is
continued proof that technology can provide a long-term solution that protects
the rights of consumers, artists, and the music industry," said Macrovision EVP
Steve Weinstein. 'Moving forward, it is clear that music will have rights
attached to it, and we will continue to develop innovative products which
protect content while at the same time enabling flexible usage rights for
consumers."
'Commercial CDs are the primary source of music
consumption for consumers worldwide and we are pleased to have been able to
protect 2 billion tracks for our label partners," said Adam Sexton, vice
president of music marketing at Macrovision. 'Copy-protected CDs are fast
becoming the norm, and we look forward to continued innovation and growth in
copy protection in the years ahead."
About CDS
Macrovision produces 'dual session" music CDs
that contain both 'red book" audio files, which play on traditional music
playback devices and car stereos, and 'second session" data files that can be
played on a consumer's PC. Macrovision's CDS technology prevents the ripping of
the audio files and inhibits unauthorized file sharing and CD burning. These
copy protected CDs have excellent playability and effectiveness across the
widely diverse base of consumer electronic and PC hardware. Macrovision's 'dual
session" solutions are compatible with Microsoft's Windows Media® Player and
Windows Media DRM solutions, and are designed to support other third-party DRM
vendors.
