Making peace (and cash) with MP3s

Vexorg used our newssubmit to tell us that Maverick Records sells Me'shell Ndegeocello (who doesn't know them ) latest single as an unprotected MP3 for 99 cents.

What's even more shocking is that Maverick Records' new media director, Jeremy Welt, says he doesn't care if you download the new remix to your hard drive, transfer it to an MP3 player, or burn it to a CD. He says he just hopes you'll pay 99 cents for the privilege on one of the participating sites: MP3.com, RollingStone.com, or Emusic.com.

"One of the reasons that we're doing this is to provide an alternative to piracy," Welt said. "We want to just try new things. We want to offer the consumer music in a new format unbundled from the full CD, unbundled from secure download."

Maverick's new attitude sets it at odds with the rest of the record industry, which is still waging war against MP3 file swapping on the Net.

Well this points to the right direction, but altough 99 cents is not much, 15 times 99 cents is still 15 dollar, and that's as much a CD costs, it's a good alternative for the CD-Single anyway, also the attitude of the record company is something most of you should like...
