Malaysia willl fix CD prices in order to compete with pirated CDs

Earlier we reported that the Malaysian goverment
was planning to lower prices of legal CDs. Malaysia suffers from a huge piracy
rate and the goverment thinks that the high prices of CDs are one of the
reasons. They believe that if the prices of CDs/DVDs are lowered the people will
purchase legal CDs/DVDs and leave the pirated ones alone.

They have now
introduced plans to fix the price of CDs/DVDs. The industry already proposed to
lower prices with 23-25%, but the goverment is still thinking about their own
solutions.

We will
look into their proposals, but if the prices derived from the mechanism
are too high, we will decide on our own price control," he told reporters
after launching "A Day With Publisher" programme, organised by the
National Library in conjunction with the National Reading Month Carnival
2003 here today.

The Government had on July 7 given industry
players two weeks to submit proposals on new pricing schemes for CDs,
VCDs, DVDs and cassettes, taking into account the cost and profit margins
of each

Once the price control law is established,
individuals found selling at higher than regulated prices  will face a
fine. Read the entire story here.
