Malaysian officials raid corporation, factories in piracy

Several times we already reported about the situation in Malaysia. Estimates are that 70% of the software is illegal in that country. But also in the surrounding countries the rate is very high. You can get up to five years of jail sentence in those countries.

Today another report about a raid in a headquarters of a Malaysian corporation and several factories.

Law enforcement officers seized about 150,000 ringgit (dlrs 39,000) worth of computer equipment, including illegal copies of the popular design program AutoCAD, from the main office of a mold manufacturer Tuesday in Klang, 30 kilometers (18 miles) west of Kuala Lumpur.

Officials did not identify the company. But Ronald Chua, the South Asian legal counsel for Autodesk, a California-based software company that produces AutoCAD, said the company was a "large corporation" that "makes millions of ringgit" and had branch offices throughout Malaysia.

No one was immediately arrested, but Zainal Abidin Noordin, the anti-piracy enforcement director in Selangor state, said senior management officials would be prosecuted in court once investigations are complete.

Seems like they are active with solving the problem. However I must say that I think that these raids get a little to much media attention and I wonder if it really helps.
