Microsoft Windows XP surprises some digital music fans

We don't know mp3 because it would have cost a few extra dollars to tack on to windows xp, but we prefer wma.

"Microsoft dropped the MP3 ripping capability from Windows XP because it was not worth adding a few dollars to Windows XP's price tag to license the technology from Thomson Multimedia, said David Caulton, Windows digital media product manager in Redmond, Wash."

I hate to break it to microsft that wma if encoded to prevent piracy has already been surgically repaired to allow copying of "encoded files".
