Microsoft planning internal HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360?

We can read a report today coming from DigiTimes, that quotes some unnamed Taiwanese sources, claiming that Redmond has another version of the Xbox 360 coming...one with an internal HD-DVD drive! It would not surprise me if it were true, but unnamed sources can be unreliable. However, it's fun to speculate the possibilities.

Talk about choices. You could get an Xbox 360 on the cheap with no HD drive, then buy one later if you got a suitable display device. Also, what happens if the Xbox360 with the internal drive is quite a bit cheaper than the PS3?

Microsoft has started designing a new-generation of Xbox 360's equipped with an internal HD-DVD drive and is selecting manufacturers in Taiwan to build the drive, according to sources in Taiwan's optical disc drive (ODD) industry.

If the process of selecting partner makers and subsequent certification goes smoothly, Microsoft may launch the Xbox 360 equipped with the built-in HD-DVD drive in the first half of 2007 at the soonest, the sources noted.
