Microsoft predicted to having an iPod rival out by holidays

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that (surprise!) Microsoft is about to launch a rival product to directly compete with the wildly
successful iPod line. We have to wonder if they will give it away in order to
garner market share. At the moment, it is just speculation that the player will
actually materialize and there are no pictures of the device to be found,
however, the story is coming from a variety of sources and it is beginning to
seem likely that a player is on the way. The project is supposedly being
overseen by Microsoft's J. Allard. "Allard also oversees within
Microsoft the industrywide XNA™ initiative - an ecosystem of interchangeable,
interoperable software tools and technologies from Microsoft, middleware and
game development companies."

Microsoft will start selling a digital music and video player to compete with Apple Computer"s iPod by the holiday shopping season, sources close to the matter said Wednesday.

The company is also said to be planning to
have a wireless feature on the new player to enable the downloading of
music and videos over-the-air by users, according to one source.

Microsoft
has been touting the new player to record companies in the last few weeks
as well as a new integrated media software application developing a system
akin to Apple"s iPod/iTunes integrated ecosystem. "They"re proposing an
iTunes model approach," another source said.

"They"re now interested in controlling the
whole vertical stack of technology from the device to the service to the
software."

The report from C|Net indicates that MS is in
negotiations with television stations as well, in order to be able to
offer shows for download. Well, this seems to be what Microsoft does best.
They watch what is successful, then they launch a competing product with added
bells and whistles. Let's see if they have the ability to de-throne the Apple
device. The iPod interface is amazing and it will be difficult to improve on
that! It should be quite an interesting struggle.
