Miller, Samsung and Napster celebrate 50 years of Rock'n Roll

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that Napster, Samsung and the Miller Brewing Company marketing planetoids will come into alignment this summer for a 60 day media blitz. They will commemorate the right of choice to drink beer, download music and are joining Rolling Stones Magazine to celebrate 50 years of Rock and Roll.

At first glance, the apparent total lack of logic and/or reasoning in this arrangement, sent me reeling in the direction of the Miller Brewing Company Website. Once there, I was promptly "carded" at the web door. I must say, it's been a while since that happened and I was quite flattered. They may have just found a new customer!

From what I read there, we can expect a multi-pronged ad campaign that will pump up the volume for beer drinkers across America. Some lucky individuals will win a Samsung portable music player, while others may require liver transplants and still others can "earn" credits for free downloads from the Napster service. Where do I sign up?

The two-month promotion will kick off in June 2004 as a part of Rolling Stone magazine's celebration of 50 years of Rock and Roll. As official partners in the celebration, Miller and Napster plan to award a Samsung Napster portable music player and a music credit to thousands of lucky music fans 21 and over across the country. The promotion will be supported by a significant marketing campaign which is expected to include national print and radio advertising, promotional activity at bars, and point of purchase displays in liquor stores, convenience stores and supermarkets.

Consumers 21 years of age and older will be eligible to win through an online sweepstakes or local giveaway promotions. Winners will use the Napster music credits to download tracks from Napster's catalog of more than 500,000 songs, and will be able to transfer music seamlessly to their Samsung Napster player to listen to their music anywhere.

'We've just launched a new marketing campaign that encourages beer drinkers to make their own choices, so this partnership with Napster is a perfect fit," said Bob Mikulay, executive vice president for marketing at Miller. 'It's all about 'choices,' whether you're talking about drinking a beer or downloading your favorites songs from Napster. And with summer being our biggest selling-season and Rolling Stone's 50th anniversary, the timing couldn't be better."

'The Napster name is forever linked to rock and roll, and we have something to offer music fans in every genre from rock and country to hip-hop and jazz. We are all about delivering the best music experience, and this partnership with Miller is an ideal vehicle to get more music and more Samsung Napster portable players into the hands of music fans across America," said Chris Gorog, CEO of Roxio.

This may be an example of what we are going to see in the future if these legal download services are to survive. It's getting crowded out there and the labels aren't going to play nice. They want the lions share of the profit as usual and don't understand what is going on, clueless in a brand new hi-tech market. This leaves outfits like Napster scrambling to find ways to continue to provide these much appreciated services to the public.

The Miller site advocates the responsible use of alcohol and does quite a bit of community service work. Not to mention, they have a brewery in an area I lived in for many years. It is a top notch facility that provides a good living wage for the folks that work there, something that is rapidly disappearing in America and for all I know, around the world. So, celebrate 50 years of Rock and Roll, why not?

Kudos to all four of these organizations for their creativity, enthusiasm and for just plain getting together in the first place. This arrangement must have taken a massive amount of work and cooperation. But most importantly, congratulations for joining forces to help one another promote your products, it's a great idea!
