Momitsu has reportedly launched the world's first region-free standalone Blu-ray player, the Momitsu BDP-899, so Blu-ray movies and DVDs purchased anywhere in the world can be played.
The BDP-899 is available for $350 and is a Blu-ray 2.0 player, upscales DVDs to 1080p, BD-Live ready, HDMI Deep Colour, and can play back the following formats: MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, Xvid, MP4 HD, WMV9, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, JPEG2000 and GIF.

It's unknown if the player is shipping from the factory as a region-free player, or if it has a modification that allows it to play movies from anywhere in the world. Afterdawn reports users have the ability to enter a six-digit code that alters the "player from Region A to B or C."
As more companies roll out standalone Blu-ray players, almost all of them have been tied to a specific region that eliminates the possibility of them playing content from other parts of the world. It's not uncommon for consumers to mod the Blu-ray player, but that voids manufacturer warranty -- and there have been reports of users inadvertently breaking their player when they make mistakes.
