Various Japanese electronics makers are finalizing plans to start producing DVD recorders. Normally these recorders will take the place of the VCR. The market for DVD recorders is growing fast, certainly now that many people have a DVD player connected to their televisions.
The Nihon Keizai said Mitsubishi Electric, another Pioneer OEM customer, and Hitachi, the country's largest electronics maker, had also established plans to manufacture their own DVD recorders.
Matsushita Electric, owner of the Panasonic brand and a major DVD recorder manufacturer, estimates the global DVD recorder market will reach 15 million units in 2005, 10 times the 1.5 million units forecast for this year.
