More information on the new SafeDisc

A few days ago we reported about a new Safedisc version that has occured and that seems to be even nastier then all previous versions of this widely used copy protection.

For now it seems only be used in Taiwan, but has now also been spotted in Hong Kong. The game 'San 8' produced by a company "Koei Japan.

Jay was kind enough to email us some of his test results of his tries to backup this CD. And he found something intresting, lets see what this protection will bring us for 'fun' in the future:



I just got this game and made a copy with plextor 2410A , it failed to install if you are using a CD/DVD-ROM that support RAW DAO-96 mode (RAO-SAO also??), it stops the installation on last file (unkoei.exe) and shows "can't copy file." => "Retry" or "Abort" ?

System:

  • OS: WinME & W2k Chinese Trad.
  • Version CloneCD: 3.1.0.0
  • Copy Writer: Plextor W2410A f/w: 1.0
  • Copy reader: Toshiba SD-M1212

  • Acer 1208A => RAW-16 Read supported => Pass
  • LG CED8080B => RAW-SAO read supported => Failed
  • Pioneer DVD-116 => RAW Read not supported => Pass
