Morpheus has been forced to cut off most of it users because updates to Grokster and KaZaA that make it impossible for older Morpheus version to communicate with the network build up by this software.
While KaZaA, Grokster and Morpheus used the same protocol it seems that a recent update made the protocol imcompatible. The company behind Morpheus has announced it will launch an "open protocol" network.
That new software, the company said, would operate using an "open protocol" network. That typically means that different software companies can write pieces of software that talk to each other. The network used by Kazaa, Grokster and until now by Morpheus, is a closed protocol network in which each company has to license the software from the owners. |
StreamCast has said it would add support for the open-source Gnutella network in future versions of its software. Streamcast executives could not immediately be reached to provide details on the new software. A Streamcast move entirely to Gnutella or another open protocol network would send a shock wave through the file-swapping community.
I don't understand why Morpheus is suddenly incompatible with Grokster and KaZaA and why the company behind Morpheus doesn't want to upgrade their software to the new version. Do they know something we don't know ?
While FastTrack (The company behind the technology used in KaZaA etc) remains silent, others have started to build an opensource FastTrack compatible protocol called giFT.
