Movie downloads on your PS3?

In a recent report from the Los Angeles Times an anonymous Sony official said that Sony will introduce a movie download service for its Playstation 3. There is no official reaction on the subject yet, but on the console's official blog a few suggestions were made. Senior Vice President, Peter Dille, says that 2008 is the year of the Playstation 3 and that 'digital media download services' are needed to keep this title. Of course this isn't an offical 'go' for a movie download service on the PS3, but according to the LA Times' anonymous official the video download service will be based on open standards and available this summer.

Dille continues his post by saying that Sony will introduce a movie service for the next-gen console, but this doesn't mean that a download service is in works now. "It's already been confirmed that we'll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you've seen or used." Hopefully this will mean that the LA Times is right since they were talking about a service that allows you to download the video content to different PCs and handhelds like the PSP.

Currently there is a wide range of set-top boxes and devices that offer movie download services. We are very curious how Sony will work this out and make it different from the others.
