Mufin has launched a new music player aimed at offering listeners a new method to manage, enjoy and find new music they may be interested in.
The algorithm makes use of a custom fingerprint on each song that reliese on tempo, instruments, characteristics, sound density, and rhythm structure, among other things.
"The mufin player doesn't just sort your music by artists or track names like you are used to, but also by sound similarity," according to a post on the official Mufin blog. "It's not just useful when you're building a playlist, but also to keep track of which music tracks go together in your library musically. Since it's all based on sound, all tracks in your collection will be included in the sorting, no matter if they have proper META information like album or artist name or not."

The Web-based music service will use human analysis, which can be unreliable at times, but we'll see what more users think of how Mufin's algorithm works. Once the music player analyzes your music tracks, it will be able to recommend songs that are similar to the ones you already listen to -- in a similar fashion to online service Pandora.
If you're a Mufin user, go ahead and give the new music player a shot, and let us know what you think of it! It's a free download and the analysis of large music collections may take a long time, but it should prove to be a useful technology for music fans.
