Music-industry meltdown: Major labels struggle after slump

scum1 used our newssubmit to tell us about an intresting article on the Seattletimes about the current state of the music industry. As we all know the industry is in a big slumb and there are a lot of reasons why.

This article has some intresting thoughts, and also claims that piracy is only a small part of the big problems from which the music industry is suffering.

Industry honchos won't admit it, but they initiated the decline themselves. The Big Five gobbled up almost every small label in America in the 1980s and '90s, and, in order to try to match the profits of old (the music industry had grown, unabated, for more than 30 years), they fired most of the people who discover and nurture talent.

Furthermore, as the Grammy nominations attest (see accompanying article), the industry tends to concentrate on, and give awards to, those artists who are selling big '” often flashes-in-the-pan, like the Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears '” rather than those who show artistry and promise. The industry has largely sacrificed its future in the quest for quick profits.
