If there's one thing music companies do well then it's complaining about piracy, sueing people and keeping prices up. Quality of the music seems to have become rather unimportant and legal music download sites had a hard time to get supported by the large record labels. Fortunately they are now cooperating and e.g. iTunes seems to be a big success. More good news as ArsTechnica reports that music company BMI can hardly complain anymore as it has posted a record year. The company reports that it has found new ways to create revenue:

BMI's repertoire showed strength across the musical spectrum with hits from multiple Grammy winner Alison Krauss, to goth rockers Evanescence, to country chart-toppers Toby Keith, Martina McBride and Tim McGraw, and urban superstars R. Kelly, Kanyé West and Pharrell Williams. BMI composers scored seven of the year's top ten films, including Shrek 2 and the new installment of the Harry Potter series, |
This is not only a good news for BMI, it's good news for
the music industry itself. This might be the proof that people really want to
pay for good music. Put good music at the top and making money a little below
and you'll be fine. Also creativity and letting go old business models will
help and there are a lot of new opportunities for record labels nowadays, if
they want to continue their business they'll need to make sure they're up to
date on new technologies else they'll make themselves obsolete. Discuss this in
our Music Downloads, P2P
& Legal Issues Forum .
