Nan Ya Plastics ends optical disc production



Nan Ya Plastics producer
of both DVD+R/-R and CDR optical media has decided to cease production and shut
up shop in the optical media market. Disappointing revenues and
profits from this business area have contributed to this
according to local optical disc makers and sales agents.


Nan Ya Plastics had a
manufacturing capacity of 17-18 million CDR discs a month and about 2-3million
DVD+R/-R discs. Sales agents for Nan Ya have been notified that production of
all optical disc media will cease within three to six months. Nan Ya is
currently trying to secure Chinese or Taiwan buyers
for its production facilities. Nan Ya will in the mean time cut its current
number of staff from 350 to just 50.


During 2004 at the Taipei
Computex show Nan Ya had talked about the future possibilities of expanding its
production facilities. Nan Ya Plastics declined to give any comments on this
news.

NPC currently has a monthly production capacity of 17-18 million CD-R discs and three million DVD+R/-R discs, sources stated.Sales agents for the company have stated they have been notified that production will terminate in three to six months, and the company is currently searching for Taiwan or Chinese buyers for its existing production equipment, the sources pointed out. The company is also in the process of reducing its staff from 350 people to about 50.

NPC first showcased its DVD+R/-R discs at the Computex Taipei 2004, and had ambitious plans to expand its production capacity.

Looks like they just couldn't compete with the price wars between various
media manufacturers.
