New DVD recorders from Panasonic and Pioneer

Sony's new DVD±R/RW recorder (the RDR-GX7) will get keen competition. Both Panasonic and Pioneer have announced new set-top DVD recorders at CES too. The Panasonic DMR-E50 is a DVD-R/RAM recorder, the Pioneer DVR-001 is a DVD-R/RW recorder and the Pioneer DVR-002H is a DVD-R/RW recorder with a built in HDD.

Panasonic DMR-E50

  • Panasonic's innovative DVD recorder allows consumers to record superb digital video onto DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs in a snap. The DMR-E50's joint support of DVD-RAM and DVD-R media provides the best of both worlds: DVD-R for the highest compatibility, allowing consumers to share video recordings with virtually anyone with a DVD player; and DVD-RAM for rewritability and benefits like Time Slip(TM), Chasing Playback, and Simultaneous Play and Record.

  • The DVR-002H, with its 80-gigabyte hard disc drive, offers expanded capabilities including the ability to playback a DVD while recording onto the hard drive or to play programs from the hard drive while recording onto DVD. The hard drive also enables consumers to watch programs from the beginning while the recorder simultaneously finishes the recording. Content from the hard drive can also be transferred to a DVD for long term storage. A one- hour program can be transferred to DVD-R in as little as 2 1/2 minutes.
  • The DVR-001 is a great entry-level DVD recorder for anyone interested in replacing an outdated VCR with simple one-button recording.

The Panasonic DMR-E50 will be available in March with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $599 and the Pioneer DVR-001 and DVR-002H will be available in summer 2003 with a MSRP of $625 and $999, respectively.
