The CD Speed 2000 website has released some nice tools for controlling and testing the speed of your DVD, CD-ROM or CD-Writer. These tools are already present in Nero 5.5 (except for DVD-Speed) from Ahead but here are the updates:

From these programs I have been using DriveSpeed for quite some time now. It works excellent for playing DivX movies or MP3 files because they need a low speed of the drive and thus your drive will not sound like an airplane anymore
