New levy on HI MD technology based players in the Netherlands

A new levy is introduced in the Netherlands for
blanc HI MD's. This is the new minidisc technology where you can record up to 1
gigabyte of data, music and video. The levy is  € 1,10 per gigabyte,
so  € 1,10 per disc.

Sony introduced this new minidisc
technology in January of this year. They have a complete line of Hi-MD™ Walkman
digital music players available.

With Hi-MD technology, users can record up to 45 hours of music
at up to 100 times transfer speed on one disc, while still enjoying the
extensive battery life, compact design and robustness for which MD players
are recognized. Removable, re-recordable Hi-MD media provides music lovers
with unlimited storage capacity to build an infinite library of their
favorite songs.

The levy is to compensate authors because of the
private (home) copying of their products. It will come into effect on July
1 2004. In the Netherlands there are also levies on digital minidiscs,
audio discs, data discs, DVD's and analog tapes.
