Anonymous writes that the French Blue-Hardware has posted an interesting article on upcoming writer models planned for the end of this year and the beginning of 2003. The author of the article has picked up some rumours from his contact person.
Whereas 52X writers are beginning to appear on the market, the rumour states that manufacturers are already working on new models supporting amazing speeds of 56X writing, 56X reading and 32X re-writing:
These genuine 'racing cars' should be announced at the end of this year even at the beginning of 2003. If one can believe the received information from them, these models will be able to write CD-R discs at the speed of 56X and CD-RW discs at 32X. As for reading the speed will be 52X and even 56X. |
As you can note, the next generation of writers will have higher or equivalent writing speeds compared to the reading rates. Arrived at such a stage, one can wonder which is the interest for a private individual to pass from a 48X or 52X writer to a 56X model. Indeed, the difference in time of writing will be hardly 8 to 10 seconds in the best of cases.
On the other hand the advantage of these next models will be the standardization of 32x CD-rewriting. That will be a considerable point and it's a particularly interesting speed when the writer supports the Mount Rainier standard.
These are of course still rumours but personally I wouldn't be surprised to see such drives by the end of this year. 56X is really pushing the limits of CD-recorders and it will probably increase the risk of exploding discs during the read or recording process. What do you think; 56X is overkill or faster is simply better?
