Nintendo ships over 100 million DS units

Nintendo recently announced that it has shipped more than 100 million DS units, which makes it the fastest video game console to eclipse 100 million.

"We are hoping to be accepted and loved by everyone by delivering novel entertainment and surprises so that there will be not only a Nintendo for every household but a Nintendo for every person," the company said in a statement.  "We aim to shift from one machine for one family to one machine for one person."

Nintendo's emphasis on video games for everyone -- ranging from RPGs to Brain Age -- broadens the number of customers the Japanese game maker can sell DS units and video games to.

The latest version of the DS, the DSi, which has a built-in camera, was released in Japan last November and will be available in North America next month.

The Sony PlayStation 2 game console reached 100 million units shipped after five years and nine months -- the original DS was launched in November 2004.

Both the DS and the Wii home console have helped Nintendo persevere in a time when other electronics companies, including competitor Sony, have been forced to lay off workers and cut financial outlooks.  The video game market has proven to be somewhat recession proof, with Nintendo leading the way.
