LONDON, August 19,
2003 - Macrovision Corporation (Nasdaq: MVSN), leading provider of copy
protection and digital rights management ('DRM") technologies announced today
that L.S.P. (formerly Light and Shadow Productions) has licensed SafeDisc® for
its new game, "Rebels: Prison Escape".
L.S.P. is a publisher of video games and
interactive products based in France. Founded in 1999, L.S.P. has quickly
established itself as one of the leading independent publishing houses working
with some of the largest film entertainment companies including Warner Bros,
Sony Pictures and Dreamworks SKG. L.S.P. is now concentrating on original
properties for the PC and console market and has already sold more than 3
million units worldwide.
"Rebels: Prison Escape" is the first game that
L.S.P. has utilised licensing to prevent unauthorised copies being made, as
Olivier Goulon, C.O.O. explains: 'We have previously marketed our products to an
audience that does not typically copy games. "Rebels: Prison Escape" is the
first game produced by our company targeted at hard core gamers, who obviously
are more technologically astute and therefore more capable of unauthorised
copying, and potentially distributing, the content. Therefore, we needed to find
an efficient protection against this threat."
Martin Brooker, Macrovision Europe's Director of
Sales commented: 'Macrovision's SafeDisc protects CD-ROMs from unauthorised
replication, encouraging users to purchase legitimate copies, and thereby
protects the rights and revenues of games publishers and developers. We are very
pleased that L.S.P. selected SafeDisc to protect their new software."
Olivier Goulon further comments on why L.S.P. has
chosen to work with Macrovision: 'Put simply, SafeDisc is the industry standard.
It is easy to implement and efficient '” exactly what we needed."
About SafeDisc
SafeDisc is the most widely used copy protection
solution used by developers and publishers of video game software, application
training products, dictionaries, encyclopaedias and information products,
providing the highest level of security against both casual copying and
hackers.
It is a software-based solution that does not
require any changes to the publisher's application code and is compatible with
standard PC or Mac environments and CD/DVD-ROM hardware. It is comprised of
proprietary authenticating digital signatures embedded on the disc, an
encryption wrapper, and various anti-hacking technologies that secure the
CD/DVD-ROM executable. The patented SafeDisc digital signatures are added to
each original disc during the mastering/replication process and prevent copying
by standard optical disc writers.
With a number of security options available,
depending on the requirements of the publisher, SafeDisc is extremely flexible.
It can be set up to require the original CD/DVD-ROM be present in the drive each
time the main application is accessed, or for the CD/DVD-ROM to be inserted
after a specified number of days, at the discretion of the publisher.
Alternatively, the configuration can be formatted to lock the application to a
particular PC, so that the CD/DVD-ROM is only required for installation.
