No next gen DVD winner likely to boost dual format devices

With no definite winner so far when it comes to Blu-ray vs. HD DVD for the foreseeable future, Taiwanese makers are concerned that this is going to push makers into offering dual-format optical disc devices that can handle both formats.

Going by the DigiTimes report, Amazon.com has 203 HD DVD titles and 196 Blu-ray disc titles and consumers seem to be becoming more neutral towards both formats.  Samsung Electronics plans to offer dual-format drives that can record & play with both formats and while Hitachi-LG Data Storage is also considering to produce dual-format drives, the drawback will be that dual-format devices would cost more than a device only supporting a single-format.

From what I can see, Toshiba appeared to be having the advantage with their prices falling, but with their prices back up to where they started (~US$499) at most online stores and Blu-ray player prices falling to the point where a few stores are selling them for around US$599, there is not as much of a price difference between the two, particularly if Blu-ray player pricing falls any further.
