Non PC DVD recorders to flourish in 2005 says In-Stat

Stand alone DVD recorders are gaining momentum big time, driving the market for non- PC hardware. We can read in this article from DMEurope, that In-Stat market research company states  DVD recorder sales not requiring a PC doubled in 2004 and will grow by an additional 87 per cent in 2005.

'Contrary to our expectations, DVD player unit shipments grew in all regions in 2004, with the exception of Japan," says Michelle Abraham, In-Stat analyst. 'In Japan, DVD player shipments declined, while DVD recorders grew by over 100 per cent."

Worldwide DVD recorder unit shipments are to grow from 9.4m in 2004 to 67.7m in 2009.

Digital TV tuners are to be added to DVD recorders in increasing numbers in Japan, Europe, and North America. The FCC DTV tuner mandate is to require a DTV tuner in each DVD recorder shipped in the US after 1 July 2007.

The article goes on to say that next-generation Blu-ray recorders from 3 different manufacturers (un-named) are shipping in Japan, along with the first HD-DVD players to ship during the second half of 2005 with 90 movie titles for consumer viewing. Apparently, In-Stat is also predicting some 4 million units of Blu-ray players and recorders shipping by 2008, and this is not including game consoles.
