OEM prices for 16x DVD burners rapidly decreasing, more price cuts to come

GristyMcFisty used our news submit to tell us that Taiwanese manufacturers are lowering the prices of 16x DVD burners. Also the Hitachi-LG joint venture will lower prices for its 16x Super Multi DVD Burners.

The price decrease is caused by an increased competition to get OEM orders from large computer builders such as Dell and HP. According to Digitimes the prices can even drop further next quarter as 16x DVD burners are becoming widely available and mainstream and production costs are also decreasing.

Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS), Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology (TSST), Lite-On IT, BenQ and Pioneer are the main competitors for 16x DVD burner OEM orders, the makers indicated. Recently, some makers have been cutting prices in an attempt to receive more orders, and OEM prices for 16x DVD burners may fall to as low as US$50 by next quarter, the makers added.

An article on Digitimes also mention that the South Korean will launch as 16x DVD+/-R burner in December, currently the company only writes 8x at DVD-R discs. More information in this article.
