Opulent Records Music a new record label is trying out a new approach to selling music online by using their own P2P network to distribute music as WeedSM files and pay users that share it out. The small downloadable utility works much like iTunes and payment is made through Paypal. Songs cost around $ 1 a pop and may be transferred an unlimited number of times to CD or windows media compatible devices. The network currently offers music from the Artist The Big Creek.
Each new member that opens a Paypal account receives of credit for roughly five songs. A user may listen to any song up to three times prior to purchase. When the user makes a purchase, the Artist receives 50% of the payment and 35% goes to three users involved in the track upload from their end. The user may then share their purchased songs to earn credit for each upload.

This record label's approach seems like a handy way of using bandwidth efficiently while keeping users happy that provide their bandwidth for redistribution. It is also nice to see that the record label gives 50% of its sales to the Artists since nearly every other legal download service gives around 50% to the recording industry and leaves the artist with no more than 10% of the track price.
Giving 35% of each sale to the file sharers is very unlike the RIAA. Maybe this label will teach the music industry another lesson on how to go about handling their business online.
